Technology and Sustainability Drive Africa’s Mining Future
By Bradley Riviera
At African Mining Week 2025, the spotlight turned to innovation and sustainability as key drivers of Africa’s mining future. Tech firms showcased autonomous haul trucks, drone-based geological surveys, and blockchain-enabled supply chain tracking.
Dr. Nthabiseng Molefe, CTO of GeoTech Africa, said, “Digital transformation is no longer optional—it’s essential. Smart mining is the key to unlocking Africa’s full resource potential.”
Sustainability initiatives are also gaining traction. Companies are investing in water recycling systems, solar-powered operations, and biodiversity restoration. The newly launched African Mining Sustainability Index ranks firms based on environmental impact, governance, and community engagement.
Countries like Zambia, Tanzania, and Namibia are integrating ESG metrics into licensing and reporting frameworks, positioning themselves as responsible mining destinations in a competitive global market.
