Tanzania Mandates Local Refining for Gold Producers Amid Global Price Surge

Dodoma, Tanzania – In a bold move to boost domestic value addition, the Tanzanian government has announced that gold producers must refine at least 20% of their output locally. The new regulation, set to take effect in Q4 2025, aims to strengthen the country’s refining capacity and curb illicit trade.

The directive comes amid a global surge in gold prices, with Tanzania seeking to capitalize on its position as one of Africa’s top gold producers. Officials say the policy will create jobs, improve revenue tracking, and enhance transparency in the gold supply chain.

Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde emphasized that the regulation aligns with Tanzania’s broader industrialization agenda. “We want to ensure that our mineral wealth translates into tangible economic benefits for Tanzanians,” he said.
Industry players are now assessing the impact on operations, with several refining facilities expected to scale up capacity to meet the new threshold.
