Namibian President Takes Direct Control of Mines, Energy and Industry Portfolio

Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has removed Natangwe Ithete from his roles as deputy prime minister and minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, the presidency announced on Sunday. The statement said the president will immediately assume responsibility for the ministry to ensure continuity and tighter coordination in a sector central to the country’s growth.

No explanation for the change was provided. Ithete, who was appointed to both positions in March as part of the president’s new administration, will remain a member of parliament.

Namibia, rich in resources such as uranium and diamonds, has also made several major offshore oil discoveries in recent years and is targeting its first commercial crude production by 2030.
