Cementation Africa to Upgrade Mindola Shaft, Extending Life of Zambia’s Nkana Mine

Mining contractor Cementation Africa is advancing critical infrastructure work at the Mindola shaft in Zambia, a project set to extend the lifespan and improve the efficiency of operations at the Nkana Mine in Kitwe.

Working with Mopani Copper Mines, the company is leveraging decades of expertise in shaft sinking and underground mining to modernise the facility and prepare it for long-term production.

Mindola Shaft Upgrade to Boost Mining Efficiency

The project focuses on equipping the Mindola shaft for future production, with a scope that includes the construction of a new permanent headgear, installation and commissioning of winders, and the deployment of advanced 3D scanning technology.

According to Cementation Africa’s Zambia executive, Ben Adendorff, the goal is to ensure precise shaft alignment and structural integrity. A full 3D scan of the shaft will be conducted to identify any misalignment and guide corrective reinforcement measures, ensuring safe and efficient hoisting operations.

In addition, the project includes the installation of an overland conveyor system and the equipping of the remaining 500 metres of the shaft, positioning it for sustained mining activity.

Engineering Precision and Advanced Technology

The upgrade involves removing the existing sinking headgear and winders before installing new permanent systems. Once complete, specialised equipment will scan the shaft from top to bottom—including sections already equipped beyond 1,000 metres—to verify structural accuracy and guide rail alignment.

The lower 500 metres of the shaft will be lined and reinforced to maintain a true vertical profile, ensuring the safe movement of personnel and materials.

Building on Proven Mining Expertise

Cementation Africa’s work at Mindola builds on its track record in delivering complex shaft projects across Southern Africa. The company previously completed the sinking and equipping of major shafts at Mopani, including the Synclinorium and Mufulira Henderson shafts, as well as projects such as the Palabora and South Deep shafts.

According to Hercilus Harmse, the company’s experience in challenging ground conditions and deep-level mining environments enables it to apply innovative engineering solutions and specialised equipment in complex projects.

Safety and Reliability at the Core

Safety remains a central focus for Cementation Africa. The company has achieved over eight million fatality-free shifts across its shaft sinking and mine development operations over the past decade.

Graham Chamberlain noted that the company integrates redundancy into critical systems, ensuring that mechanical backups are in place alongside electronic systems to maintain operational safety and reliability.
