Perseus Mining has secured a backup electricity system for its Nyanzaga gold project in northwestern Tanzania as the company prepares for its planned first gold pour in January 2027.

The Australian-listed miner (ASX, TSX: PRU) has acquired 28 containerised generator sets through South African power engineering company USP&E to provide emergency electricity at the mine, which is located far from a reliable grid supply.

USP&E entered the project through ECG, an Australian electrical and automation engineering consultancy responsible for managing the project’s engineering, procurement and construction.

The backup power installation comprises 28 Cummins KTA50G3 generator sets, each with a capacity of 1 megawatt, giving the system a combined generating capacity of 28MW.

It also includes six bulk fuel tanks, each holding 72,000 litres, three pump skids and 28 day tanks. According to USP&E, the containerised design is intended to speed up installation, while the fuel storage infrastructure will allow the mine to maintain power during an extended interruption to its electricity supply.

USP&E managing director Matthew Fredericks said Nyanzaga demonstrated the company’s experience in providing power solutions for mining operations in challenging frontier markets.

Major contributor to Perseus production

Nyanzaga is expected to become an important part of Perseus Mining’s production portfolio once operational. The company estimates that the project could account for 28% of its gold production through to the end of the decade.

The mine is forecast to produce more than 200,000 ounces of gold annually during its first 14 years of operations.

Located in northwestern Tanzania, Nyanzaga is close to Barrick’s Bulyanhulu and AngloGold Ashanti’s Geita gold mines, placing it within an established gold-producing region.

With first gold targeted for January 2027, the installation of reliable backup power is an important part of preparations to bring the project into production and support its planned operations.
