Multotec Expands Global Reach As New CEO Takes The Helm

South African mineral processing equipment manufacturer Multotec has highlighted its international growth as Johan Robbertse takes over as Group CEO, succeeding Thomas Holtz after two decades at the helm.

The leadership transition was formally announced at Electra Mining Africa 2026 in Johannesburg, where Holtz was appointed chairperson after 20 years as CEO.

Under Holtz’s leadership, Multotec developed from a predominantly South African manufacturer into a globally integrated business supplying mineral processing equipment to operations in 100 countries across six continents. The company now exports about 60% of its equipment.

Robbertse, who joined Multotec in 2010, said the company’s 53 years of specialist process knowledge provides a strong foundation for its next phase of growth. The business employs about 1,900 people globally, bringing together expertise from different regions and cultures.

Multotec has manufacturing operations across Africa, South America, Asia and North America, supported by sister companies in Europe and Australia. South Africa and the wider African market remain its largest market, accounting for approximately 60% to 70% of the business.

Holtz said the company remains committed to South Africa and Africa while continuing to expand into markets where mining activity is growing.

“We have every intention of staying here and growing here,” Holtz said, while noting that changing commodity cycles mean Multotec must continue identifying opportunities in different mining jurisdictions.

The company has also been expanding its presence in China through a joint venture aimed at supporting the country’s mining industry. The operation initially focuses on screening products, with plans to introduce additional mineral processing technologies, including spirals and cyclones, as the business develops.

Holtz said the Chinese market presents significant opportunities for companies willing to invest in local capabilities and develop relationships with customers and partners.

Multotec’s expansion in China follows its broader strategy of combining local manufacturing, technical expertise and talent with its international mineral processing knowledge. The company already operates factories in Brazil and Chile, while its international footprint continues to grow.

The leadership change is intended to provide continuity as Multotec enters its next stage of international development, with Robbertse expected to maintain the company’s focus on customer service, product development and innovation.

For Africa’s mining sector, Multotec’s continued expansion demonstrates the potential for South African engineering and manufacturing companies to build international businesses while maintaining strong roots in the continent.
