Kansanshi Expansion Project in Zambia Set to Reshape Copperbelt Dynamics
First Quantum Minerals today confirmed the launch of its $1.25 billion Kansanshi Copper Expansion Project in Solwezi, North-Western Province. The project will upgrade processing capacity at the Kansanshi mine, already one of Africa’s largest copper-gold operations, and extend its life by at least 12 years.
The expansion includes a new concentrator plant, enhanced tailings management systems, and upgraded haulage infrastructure. The company expects copper output to increase by 30 percent once the new facilities are commissioned in late 2026. The project will also support gold recovery improvements, with targeted annual yields of 130,000 ounces.
Zambia’s Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development hailed the investment as a strategic boost to national copper production, which accounts for over 70 percent of export earnings. The government has pledged to fast-track auxiliary infrastructure, including road upgrades and power grid extensions, to support the mine’s growth.
Local suppliers and contractors are expected to benefit from procurement opportunities, while First Quantum has committed to expanding its community development programs in Solwezi, including vocational training and health services.
