Africa is intensifying efforts to unlock its vast mineral wealth, with governments across the continent moving toward greater policy alignment and regional collaboration. These efforts will take centre stage at Africa Mining Week 2026, scheduled for October 14–16 in Cape Town.

The event comes at a critical time, as global demand for critical minerals is projected to triple by 2030, while Africa holds approximately 30% of the world’s mineral reserves. This positions the continent as a key player in the global energy transition and industrial supply chains.

A major highlight of Africa Mining Week 2026 will be the Ministerial Forum on “Regional Policy Alignment: Mining Code Reforms to Unlock Value.” The session will bring together African mining ministers to explore how coordinated policies can accelerate cross-border trade, boost investment and support local value addition.

Across the continent, countries are increasingly recognising that fragmented regulatory frameworks limit growth. By aligning mining codes and policies, governments aim to create a more integrated and competitive market for minerals.

Several African nations are already advancing reforms to strengthen their position in the global mining sector.

Namibia is finalising a new Mining Code aimed at positioning the country as a regional hub connecting Southern African markets to international buyers. The strategy aligns closely with the African Continental Free Trade Area, reinforcing efforts to boost intra-African trade and value addition.

Similarly, Ghana is leveraging AfCFTA frameworks to deepen regional trade and investment. A recent partnership with Rand Refinery is focused on expanding local gold processing, supporting artisanal miners and enhancing downstream value creation.

In West Africa, Nigeria is pursuing an ambitious strategy to revitalise its mining sector. With over 40 identified mineral resources and plans to reopen more than 2,000 mines, the country is promoting regional investment corridors and cross-border industrial development.

Meanwhile, South Sudan is working with South Africa to accelerate geological mapping and mineral exploration, as part of efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil.

Addressing Africa’s Trade and Infrastructure Gaps

Despite its resource wealth, intra-African trade remains relatively low, accounting for just around 16% of total trade. This highlights the need for improved infrastructure, harmonised regulations and stronger regional cooperation.

Africa Mining Week 2026 will provide a platform to address these challenges, focusing on how shared infrastructure, regional consortia and coordinated policies can unlock new opportunities across the mining value chain.
