ActionAid hails govt for halting mining activities in Lower Zambezi

ACTIONAID Zambia Interim Country Director Andrew Chikowore has commended government for halting mining activities in Lower Zambezi National Park, saying the decision is in the best interest of local people.

Chikowera says mining activities in the national park would have also seen the loss of several jobs within the tourism sector. The Zambia Environmental Management Agency last week ordered Mwembeshi Resources Limited to cease all mining and construction activities in Lower Zambezi National Park.

In a statement, Saturday, Chikowore said commercial mining activities in the Lower Zambezi, if not strategically managed, would cause permanent damage and land degradation to the National Park. “We commend the Government of Zambia for halting mining activities in the Lower Zambezi National Park by Mwembeshi.
