Algeria–India Talks Strengthen Strategic Energy and Mining Partnership
Algeria and India are moving toward a stronger strategic partnership in energy and mining following high-level talks between Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of State for Hydrocarbons and Mines, and Nina Malhotra, Assistant Secretary for South Asia at India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The meeting, held in Algiers during the 7th round of Algerian-Indian political consultations, included senior officials and ambassadors from both nations.
Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
The discussions emphasized the enduring strength of Algeria–India ties, building on momentum from Indian President Droupadi Murmu’s October 2024 state visit to Algeria. Both sides explored expanding cooperation across hydrocarbons, mining, and seawater desalination.
Arkab highlighted Algeria’s growing investment potential in the energy sector, encouraging Indian firms to participate in the oil and gas value chain, including exploration, production, infrastructure, and engineering services. Opportunities with Sonatrach were also highlighted, particularly in LPG marketing and distribution.
Mining, Petrochemicals, and Knowledge Sharing
The talks further explored collaboration in petrochemicals, fertilizers, phosphate processing, and mining, including joint geological research, resource exploration, extraction technologies, mapping, and workforce capacity building. India expressed strong interest in technology transfer and knowledge-sharing, aiming to foster a sustainable, mutually beneficial partnership.
The meeting reflects both countries’ shared vision of leveraging their strengths to promote long-term economic growth, deepen trade ties, and enhance strategic cooperation across critical sectors.
