XCMG to Deliver Seven XDE260 Trucks to Exxaro Resources
The agreement was formalised during a signing ceremony at the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, highlighting the partnership between the two companies.
Enhancing productivity at Grootegeluk
Exxaro said the addition of the XDE260 haul trucks is expected to:
- Enhance productivity
- Improve fleet reliability
- Support long-term operational sustainability
Grootegeluk is one of South Africa’s largest and most significant coal mining operations, and the company noted that deploying advanced and efficient equipment aligns with its broader strategy of collaborating with global technology leaders to drive operational excellence.
XDE260 truck specifications
According to XCMG:
- Payload capacity: 220 tonnes
- Maximum speed: 64.5 km/h
- Drive system: Diesel-electric
- Design: High-strength box cross-section frame optimised for variable loads and high-intensity continuous operations
- Engine: High-performance engine suited for open-pit mining environments
Three of the trucks have already arrived in South Africa and are being assembled at a staging area.
Broader fleet expansion strategy
To strengthen OEM competitiveness and diversify its fleet, Exxaro has also procured:
- Seven 227-tonne class Komatsu 830E-5 diesel-electric trucks
- Three 221-tonne class Hitachi Construction Machinery EH4000AC-3 diesel-electric trucks
Exxaro reiterated its commitment to sustainable growth and responsible mining practices while maintaining safety and efficiency.
XDE260 deployment elsewhere in Africa
A fleet of XDE260 trucks is also being deployed at the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea by SimFer, a joint venture between Rio Tinto, Chinalco (CIOH), and the Government of Guinea. The trucks, first shipped in December 2025, will operate at the Simandou mine, one of the world’s largest undeveloped iron ore deposits.
