Southern African countries expand coal capacity

Africa has some 47.9GW of coal-fired capacity and it is heavily concentrated in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). South Africa’s 41.1GW fleet of plants accounts for the vast majority (86%) of the continent’s total. Botswana (400MW), and Zambia (300MW) also have notable installed coal-fired capacity, according to African Energy Live Data. The main player outside southern Africa is Morocco, with 3.9GW.
