Cementation Africa to Equip Mindola Shaft, Extending Life of Zambia’s Nkana Mine
Mining contractor Cementation Africa has been awarded a major contract to equip the Mindola shaft at Mopani Copper Mines, a move set to extend the operational life and efficiency of the Nkana Mine.
The project marks a significant step in modernising one of Zambia’s most important copper mining operations.
Upgrading Mindola Shaft for Future Production
Cementation Africa’s scope of work focuses on preparing the Mindola shaft for long-term production. This includes:
- Construction of a new permanent headgear
- Installation and commissioning of advanced winders
- Full shaft scanning using 3D technology
- Structural alignment correction and reinforcement
- Installation of an overland conveyor system
The company will also complete the equipping of the remaining 500 metres of the shaft, ensuring safe and efficient hoisting operations.
Advanced Technology to Improve Efficiency and Safety
A key component of the project is the use of 3D scanning technology to assess shaft alignment and structural integrity. This will allow engineers to identify and correct any deviations, ensuring optimal performance.
The lower section of the shaft—below 1,000 metres—will be lined and reinforced to maintain vertical accuracy and support safe conveyance of materials and personnel.
Extending the Life of Nkana Mine
The upgrade is expected to play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of the Nkana Mine, one of Africa’s oldest and largest copper operations.
Located in Kitwe, the mine has been in operation since 1932 and remains a key contributor to Zambia’s copper output and mining economy.
By improving shaft infrastructure and operational efficiency, the project will help unlock deeper ore bodies and sustain production levels for years to come.
Building on Proven Mining Expertise
Cementation Africa brings extensive experience in shaft sinking and mine development across the continent. The company previously worked on major projects at Mopani, including:
- The Synclinorium shaft (1,280 metres deep)
- The Mufulira Henderson shaft (1,580 metres deep)
These projects have been critical in improving mine access and long-term productivity.
Focus on Safety and Innovation
Safety remains central to Cementation Africa’s operations. The company reports achieving over eight million fatality-free shifts over the past decade, reflecting its strong safety culture and engineering standards.
To enhance reliability, critical systems such as winders are designed with redundant safety mechanisms, ensuring continuous operation even in the event of system failure.
Economic and Community Impact
Beyond technical delivery, the company continues to contribute to local communities in Zambia through initiatives such as:
- Education support programs
- Community development projects
- Employment opportunities
This long-term presence has helped position Cementation Africa as a preferred mining contractor in the region.
Outlook for Zambia’s Mining Sector
The Mindola shaft project highlights ongoing investment in Zambia’s mining infrastructure as operators seek to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and extend mine life.
With copper demand rising globally—driven by the energy transition—projects like Nkana’s upgrade are critical to maintaining Zambia’s role as a leading copper producer.
Conclusion
Cementation Africa’s work at the Mindola shaft represents a strategic investment in the future of the Nkana Mine. By combining advanced engineering, digital technology, and proven expertise, the project is set to enhance operational efficiency and secure long-term production.
